all my wild macro photography is handheld with Tamron 90mm macro lens without VC (equiv to without IS in Canon). There is no Tripod or other stabilizers involved. I attain this because of closing down the apperture to around 32 and increasing the shutter speed to around 320. Because i carry a handheld flash (speedlight connected to the camera with a ttl cord), I can determine the direction and angle of light as well as get a black bg when i want. Some examples attached.
