Hi all,

Having a problem when shooting photos with my Sony a6400 with the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x macro lens.
I noticed that macro shots are not sharp anymore. When i shoot at a distance the photos are sharp.

Her 2 examples from this afternoon. The fly is macro shot (obvious) and the potbelly pig is shot from about 5-7 meters away.
Both photos are straight out of camera jpegs without any editing except for resizing to 3000 by 2000 pixels.
I used focus magnifying on the fly with focus peaking an focus peaking on the pig. I focused on the snout of the pig and the 2 little horns (no idea what the are called ) on the fly.
Photo fly ISO 400 - 1/50 sec - f/11
Photo pig ISO 200 - 1/60 sec - f/8

Is it me or is the macro shot not sharp and the normal one is sharp? Both shots taken free hand with me leaning on the fence and the waste container at home.

More than likely hand shaking normally you shoot 1/focal length of the lens (in your case 1/100 ) or faster if hand held. On tripod with a delay or remot you can go lowest you wish. I do suggest a Flash for the setup and a diffuser will make your life much easier .

With the previous a6400 i tried 2 flashes. A meike320s and a Godox tt600s. Due to camera issues i returned both. But i found the Godox too heavy and had the idea that the Meike didn't reach the subject because it is a small flash. The Laowa is a large lens, it is 16cm long. So still looking for a flash that isn't too heavy and is also large enough to cope with the Laowa lens.

I use a Neewer 750ii it is 340g (on the specification I thought the battery comes on top )

Am looking at neewer flashes at the moment. Just need to sort out those that are compatible with my Sony a6400 and that are large enough but also not too heavy.

I agree with Bihari Bihari, 1/50 could be too slow to handhold.

the best way to discard if it is a problem with the lens is mounting the camera on a tripod or just leaving it on a table, using the 10 second delay shutter and taking a few test shots.

I guess that the blurry picture is really caused by camera shaking. 1/50 or 1/60s is too slow.... I would recommend to use at least 1/160s or even better 1/250s or use a tripod.

Test it again with a higher shutter speed or a tripod with some test cards (can be downloaded for free on some internet sites).
