I normally would have been a little tighter on the right but I really liked the form and line of the fern. Here is the picture with less space on the right.View attachment 4535
its a mean tradeoff.....on one hand the fern is causing nice patterns....on the other hand the midge is properly showcased. To my mind, your initial thoughts on cropping are correct. Thanks for sharing the right cropped version.

Very nice light. Clean and soft background. Not as detailed as expected. Could be diffraction, since you were using f/22.

For me the picture looks detailed enough. But yes, probably a bit more details will make this image a bit better.
