An other great photo Desc1234 . Do you set up black background for all images?
Thank you, Jack Yes, I generally use black for orchids as it brings out the colours more vividly. I've tried white, but never really liked the result.

Agree, I don't think white will look nice, also taking in consideration that the subject's colour is red.

Have you tried dodge & burn to get a more plastic effect? Or darken the outer areas a bit. I also have taken some flower shots like this and was really satisfied with the result.

But the orchid is beautiful even without such gimmicks.

Thank you, Jörg I do dodge and burn where I think it's necessary - I did that back in the film days as well (using the zone system). In this case I didn't as all the shadow and highlight details are there, but from your comment, I'll take another look at it and see if something can be improved. One problem I have is my light resources: Right now, I'm limited to two reading lamps and a sheet of typing paper.

At the end it's a matter of taste... some people like the plastic look and some like the natural look. So both are fine and your picture looks great
