for a compositon like this and using a 90mm macro you can be around 6-8 inches away. with 100-105-150 mm macros, you can be even further. If the source of the fire is not all that hot I dont see any risk to the lens.

Yeah true. How about if using your macro lens on crop sensor camera, you have extra reach. And I was thinking if you can use a zoom lens to get close to the fire. Probably will be great results.
