I have a Nikon D5600, not "higher end".
I think you can do it with any camera capable of full manual control. You need a flash and a lens with some macro capability.
You can start with that, taking a lot of photos until you hit one collision.
However, it gets MUCH easier if you have some kind of "drop generator", you can buy one or build one yourself if you like DIY projects and have some electrical/electronic skills. I built my own.
The D5600 will work, I use a d5300 and D7100.
I am in a dark room long shutter ,drop water ,use flash to capture water drop,close the shutter.
Yes, you can buy or make a waterdrop set up.
