Thank you gentlemen.

I was on the floor! The apple had fallen from the tree and is on the ground, so I had the camera on the ground and slightly lifted to get angles.

The nearest distance was around 3 inches from the subject.

I used flash yes - but I have modified my ringflash by fastening it to the top of the body of the unit sat in the hotshoe mount, and layered diffusion on the two elements made from polystyrene packaging and vellum paper.
