Thank you, Jack, yes I did crop it a bit, but only minimally in this case. I had a WD of roughly 35/40 cm or so. I used a bit of fill in flash too.Great photo Desc1234 . I zoomed a bit, and it is sharp too. Looks like you also cropped the photo ?

Yes, a crude one made of a sheet of card with tinfoil taped to it on my 580 EXII speedlight. I also took back the flash by about -1EV. I'd like to get a real macrolight soon though, once I've saved up enough for it.Have you used diffuser here too ?

The problem with a monster like the 580 EXII mounted on camera is the it usually flashes past the subject. However, it's so strong (GN 60) that a flat piece of card mounted overhead parallel with the flash head kicks in just enough fill in for shadows when I underexpose by say 2/3 of a stop so as to retain highlight detail. The limitation is that you're confined to lighting from above. I don't have a picture of it handy, but you'd probably laugh if you saw it.Personally I never used a diffuser. Mainly only my flash light, but I believe depends a lot on what subjects are you shooting. By the way, you can show your Diffuser here, would be interesting to see.

I'll certainly post more as I find the forums. I'm still a bit bewildered at everything going on here. I also photograph orchids quite a lot - my own and at the botanical gardens here. From what you said, looks like you have a proper studio in house. I usually don't shoot insects or moving objects because I don't really have that patience, so limited only with in house subjects such as jewellery. I would love to see more of your images Desc1234 .
