It's not a question of hard disk capacity but a question of security. My hard disk isn't full at all.
But I was confirmed in my decision as the the external hard disk from my colleague had a crash with all it's pictures and videos from his kids.

He was able to recover some pictures from some older USB sticks and the SD-card of his camera, but especially the old pictures and videos was last forever.

OMG, I still remember times when my parents use to print all pictures taken and stored in big photo album. I do store images on my site too, for 3 years now, and luckily did not had any issues.

But yes. Family images are very important and should last forever.
