I normally shoot in raw only. But today i did shoot raw+jpeg. Jpeg settings Large + standard creative style. I always noticed that the raw files needed some work when they were imported into lightroom, they did not look like the out of the camera jpeg files. But today after importing all the photos i could not tell without looking at the files extension which was which.
These 2 photos are unedited exports from lightroom, one of them is the exported raw file, the other is the exported jpeg file. i only resized them in photoshop, nothing else done to them. I can not tell which is which (i know but can not say here)

Solution
there's an easy test: set the creative style to monochrome and the camera to RAW+JPG, take a shot and import it to LR.

  • if the RAW file is a colored image, then there's no problem at all.
  • if the RAW file is a b/w image, give some time to LR to fully load the image, as LR shows the embedded JPG thumbnail inside the RAW file and then it processes the RAW and shows its own version. your new RAW files are 42MP and much bigger than the ones from the A6400 or the Nikon were. it may take several seconds for this process to finish.

I don't think you should expect any differences when having set Raw+jpg.
They were different before, the Raw file looked like a dull jpeg which needed to be cleaned. I don't have any raw files anymore from when i did shoot Raw+Jpeg otherwise i would have shown you.

Since a few months I shoot in Raw only. But yesterday i decided to shoot in Raw+Jpeg (Don't ask me why) and noticed that both files almost were identical. I did shoot Raw+Jpeg before with the Sony a6400 and the Raw file was different then the Jpeg file, you could see the difference straight away and could tell which was which. I think that it might have something to do with the latest Lightroom update.

There shouldn't be any differences at all if you view these 2 files within camera. I don't know how works with Sony, but with Canon as far as I'm aware, there's no difference at all.

I am not looking at them in camera. I am looking at them on my Laptop after importing them. The camera shows me the jpeg version and not the raw version. On the laptop i can see both next to each other and then they look almost like twins

That's what they should look. That's obvious that will look identical but just different format. The jpg file you don't need to edit, and the raw is to edit. Even when you choose bracketing, they are look the same.

But they never did look the same after i imported them to the laptop from the sd card. That is what i am trying to make clear. The imported raw file looked worse then the imported jpeg file. Now they both look almost exactly the same. I just want Lightroom to show me the raw file and not a jpeg interpretation of the raw file.

Alright, have you tried to import that raw file again? Maybe it got damaged somehow during the importing. It does happen to me sometimes and have to import the photo again.

I imported it again into lightroom from the sd card, also first copied it to harddrive and then imported into lightroom. Same results. Only thing i haven't tried yet is using a different sd card, which i am going to do after posting this.

Try to upload both files in a folder, open them up and check the difference. Uploading straight on Lightroom might change the images.
